Fenris – The Wolf Son of Loki

Fenris (also known as Fenrisulfr) is the monstrous wolf son of Loki in Norse mythology. He is also the brother of Jormungandr, the World Serpent, and Hel, Goddess of Death.

The eldest of Loki’s children was Fenris, a giant wolf, while the younger was Jormungandr, a serpent and the older sister was Hel, a goddess who was half living woman and half decomposing corpse. Loki fathered these three children with the giantess Angrboda, also known as the Bringer of Grief or Witch of Ironwood, and they would become some of the most fearsome creatures in Norse mythology.

When the gods discovered that the children of Loki had taken on shapes and showed themselves in Asgard, they knew they could cause them great distress. This is why they sent a messenger to Jarnvid, the Iron Wood, and asked that Loki bring his offspring before them. The first, whose greed was the cause of destruction, showed himself as a fearful wolf. This is how Fenrir was named.

Jormungandr, the snake, and Hel, the goddess of death, followed, both of whom are able to take on many forms. They are all powerful because they are of mixed race and possess hybrid vigor.

However, Fenris is the strongest of them all. At Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods, Fenris will break free from his chains and run through the world biting everything in his path. He will finally be put to death by Odin’s avenging son Vidarr.
