How do you score a show that tinkers with time, features a Norse god who’s neither hero nor villain and constantly confounds viewers with new mysteries? That’s the task faced by English composer Natalie Holt, who becomes only the second woman to have written a dramatic score for a Marvel Cinematic Universe TV series (following Pinar Toprak, who scored 2019’s Captain Marvel).
Holt sought out to create a sound that would be fresh and fun while still maintaining the familiarity of the MCU. That meant blending traditional orchestral strings with vintage analog synthesizer sounds, Scandinavian folk instruments and even the unnerving theremin, an electronic instrument that was first used in Stanley Kubrick’s classic sci-fi film The Day the Earth Stood Still. She also incorporated ticking clock sounds to suggest the idea of time and the concept of timelines changing.
