Loki New Movie Review

The MCU’s most nefarious villain finally gets the spotlight in his own series, courtesy of Disney+. The god of mischief is back in full force in Loki, which hits the ground running with a series bursting with time-hopping shenanigans and fun character moments. The show also tackles bigger concepts like determinism and free will in an intelligent way while still being an action-packed superhero revel.

It opens up after the Avengers’ time-traveling shenanigans in Endgame, when this past version of Loki scoops up a stray Tesseract. The time-line monitors at the Time Variance Authority notice this, and they want him to fix a glitch that could threaten their sacred timeline. But they need to know if this Loki is trustworthy, which isn’t easy given his history of backstabbing people and stealing their work.

Tom Hiddleston brings a welcome charm to the role, and his comic timing is on point here. He manages to balance all the nuance that the character requires with a sense of mischievous flair that isn’t overpowering. He makes this new Loki feel very much like the old one, despite having been away from MCU duties for a few years.

The other big winner here is Sophie Di Martino, whose chemistry with Hiddleston is perfect. They make for an excellent team, playing off each other’s strengths and weaknesses with a natural ease. As they journey together across the mystical planet Lamentis-1, it becomes clear that this Loki isn’t just a supreme narcissist; he cares deeply about Sylvie. The fact that they can grow so close despite their differences is a huge boon for the show.
