Loki – The God of Mischief

loki background

The God of Mischief has a lot going against him. He’s jealous of his adoptive brother Thor, who carries Mjolnir — the enchanted hammer that’s powerful enough to destroy Asgard. He has also lied, deceived and betrayed his way through his entire thousand-year life. He’s slept with the goddesses Angerboda and Sigyn, produced offspring including Jormungand, Fenris Wolf and Hela, Goddess of Death, and tried to overthrow his father Odin multiple times.

In spite of all these obstacles, loki never loses sight of his own glory and self-worth. He’s the greatest villain in Norse mythology, but he’s also one of Marvel Comics’ most beloved characters. He first appeared in 1949 romance and mystery comic Venus #6, but Jack Kirby gave the character the personality and defining visual style that makes him such a recognizable presence. He’s been an ally and an enemy to Thor, and he’s taken many forms throughout the years, most recently occupying the human body of Lady Sif.

He also tries to steal the Tesseract, a cosmic cube that’s bigger than Earth and is holding the power of all creation. While he’s no match for the Avengers, he does manage to use it to create a branched timeline on Lamentis-1. He and Sylvie form a romantic bond, but when Mobius derides them for it, Loki tells him that everyone working at the TVA are Variants — causing them to be pruned by Judge Renslayer and stranded on Lamentis-1.
