The scheming son of King Odin and Queen Frigga of Asgard, Loki is the god of mischief and resentful of living in his older brother Thor’s shadow. He studies magical arts to advance his ambitions, but is also proficient in physical prowess and often tricks others for his own amusement. In a fit of jealousy, he engineered the death of Baldr, and was subsequently banished to Earth to await his punishment.
During the Convergence, a war raged across the Nine Realms as marauders took advantage of a damaged Bifrost Bridge. Jane Foster, in search of a portal to Asgard, unknowingly opened the gateway during the conflict and became infected with the Aether, a substance that can affect and corrupt realities. The Aether corrupted Asgard, triggering the destruction of the Bifrost Bridge and unleashing the Dark Elves across the universe.
While on Earth, Loki used the scepter to brainwash Hawkeye and Dr. Selvig, and to defeat a team of heavily armed S.H.I.E.L.D agents by shooting energy blasts and impaling them. He could also transform the scepter at will between its long, fully-extended appearance and a shorter, more deadly form that looked like a cane.
While Loki used the scepter to plan his invasion of Asgard, it later made its way aboard a S.H.I.E.L.D Helicarrier, where it was observed and studied by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. The scepter produced lethal energy blasts that seemed to be sourced from the Tesseract, and also generated low-levels of Gamma Radiation. It could also project barriers that Loki used to block bullets aimed at him during an altercation with the Avengers.
