Loki – The God of Tricks and Outsmarted by His Brother Thor

Loki is a trickster god in Norse mythology. His tricks and schemes wreak havoc in Asgard, and he is often outsmarted by his brother Thor.

He has a complicated relationship with Odin, his father and Thor’s godfather. He is initially good and altruistic, but his envy of his adopted father and his jealousy of Thor drive him to sow chaos.

As a child, Loki was a pawn in Thor’s scheming. He was often abused by his siblings, and they made fun of him for not being as strong or as good of a fighter.

When he was old enough, Loki had a blood-pact with Odin, and they became sworn brothers. He offered to help Thor whenever the God of Thunder needed assistance on Earth or Asgard.

He also was a shape-shifter, and in some myths, he appeared as a fish, a horse, a fly or an elderly woman named Thokk (Old Norse “thanks”). He had an important role in helping Freyja escape from danger by changing her shape and sex.

Ultimately, though, Loki had an unrequited love for Freyja and eventually married her. He was a father of monsters, and spawned the most abominable creatures on Earth: Fenrir, Jormungand, the Midgard Wyrm and Hel.

He later returned to Asgard and usurped the throne by pretending to die. After Thor fought Surtur, who was fated to bring Ragnarok to Asgard, he discovered that his brother had been masquerading as the King. Doctor Strange helped him find his father in Norway, and the two Asgardian princes returned to Asgard.
