The Book of Loki and Odin – A Fantasy Novel

In the classic story of Norse Mythology, King Olgne was murdered by his half-brothers. But before his untimely death, he curses his killers with the power to turn into animals. It takes a long time for his magical curse to take effect, and by the end of it, only two men remain: Thorning and Loke. The task of these two men is to travel to Norway and return with the body of their fallen king, while fighting a pack of evil dogs. The subsequent events of the book have Thorning and Loke travel through different lands, encounter various obstacles and battle various enemies in order to save their half-brother and bring back peace to the world.

Loki and Odin

Thorning’s story has a lot in common with that of the classic Njord sagas. He is an exemplary example of how a story can be told through the medium of myth, and also an exemplary example of how one can turn myths into a great story. The mythology of the book adds a fantastic sense of reality to what would otherwise have been a fanciful story. This is not to say that the book is unrealistic, because quite the contrary, but one can only hope that modern day writers and artists will pick up where Olgner left off.
