The World of Norse Mythology

The story line of Norse Mythology involves the clever trickster god of mischief, Loki, and his brother, Balder. The siblings are champions of their people – the gods of Asgard and those serving the realm of Midgard. Their enemies are the giants, the deities of Asgard, and Thor’s fellow warrior, Thor. The siblings to use their powers to battle these beings on a daily basis. Their greatest rival is a blonde dwarf, Thor’s half-brother, Braglan. He also belongs to the realm of Asgard.

The fictional character of Loki in Thor is an Odysseus-like character who was a Trojan prince. His half-brother, Balder, was a Roman general who tricked the Romans into conquering the Aetas or warring gods. While disguised as a Greek prince, he secretly allied himself with the Trojans and planned to conquer the Roman army through force. When the Aetas were defeated, Balder betrayed his brother and murdered him. He then took over the Iron Islands as a rule over all the islands until they were conquered by Orestes, a king in Athens, who then became the most powerful king in the realm.

The book series of Norse Mythology includes such memorable characters as Balder, Skuld, Fafner, Thordulus, Friar Tolfsson, Heofleif, messenger of Numbskull, and Volstagg. These characters make interesting and lovable secondary characters that fit well within the established mythology of Thor. This allows Marvel to build up the various nations and cultures of the multiverse on numerous levels while creating characters that are totally unique and wonderful additions to the Marvel Universe.
