The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer that terrorized Northern California in the 1960s. He has been connected to five murders and claimed 37 victims. His taunting letters and ciphers have inspired numerous movies, books and other forms of popular culture as well as amateur sleuths who have tried to solve the mystery for over 50 years.
The killer coined his name from a series of taunting letters that he sent to local newspapers, where he threatened further killing sprees and bombings. He included three ciphers in these letters, one of which was deciphered but failed to reveal his identity. The other two ciphers remain unsolved to this day.
He is believed to have murdered at least five people between December 1968 and October 1969, attacking them in rural, urban, and suburban settings in Benicia, Vallejo, Lake Berryessa, and San Francisco proper. His victims were primarily young couples, but he also targeted a lone cab driver.
In the aftermath of the crimes, several suspects were named, but none was ever convicted. During the decades that followed, the case became the most famous unsolved murder case in American history, inspiring countless films, books, and other forms of popular culture. HISTORY’s new nonfiction limited series The Hunt for the Zodiac Killer will open up a fresh investigation into this twisted mystery. It will explore the suspects, ciphers, and symbols that have captivated amateur detectives for generations and baffled some of the world’s greatest cryptologists.
