Who Is the Green-skinned Stranger?
The main antagonist of the Thor films is none other than the trickster-lord of mischief, Loki (about whom many people probably know nothing). He is an arrogant and ambitious man with a massive ego who seeks to conquer the universe for his own dark will. He has blonde hair and blue eyes and is well known as being one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel cosmos. What makes him so frightening, however, is that he hides his identity for just as long as possible. There is a lot more to the character of Loki than meets the eye – because he isn’t really all that bad of a character himself, but his powers to make him a force to be reckoned with!
In the classic version of the Marvel comic book story, written by Jim Butcher, Loki first appeared in the pages of the Thor movie, appearing right after the death of his brother, Thor (hew!). After attempting to steal the crown of King Thor, he was defeated when Thor threw him into the river, drowning him completely. Since then, he’s been hiding his true identity, traveling around the world, and threatening to rule the universe using his dark magic. In the latest films, he has been forced to hire the service of Dr Doom to get his powers under control, but he still manages to wreak havoc and chaos in many unexpected ways.
It’s interesting to speculate about where the idea of the Green-skinned stranger came from – it may have something to do with the fact that the comics have traditionally featured characters with strange colors and appearance, and also the fact that most of the modern versions of the character are blonde and blue-eyed. In the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book, this is made even more clear when we meet Vulture, the villain of the story, whose face is a green-yellow. We also briefly see the Fantastic Four during their encounter with him, and they are also wearing green skin. One of the things that’s always interesting about the mythology of the Marvel comic books and the films is that while the bad guys are usually evil and bad-looking, the good guys are usually pale and good-looking – and yet, in a lot of instances, the good guys are revealed to be exceptionally strong and competent, even in their day to day life. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why the concept of the Green-skinned stranger is so relevant in the Marvel Universe – because it illustrates just how difficult it is for people in our modern world to stay strong when facing tough odds.
